2008 suzuki xl-7 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The name xl7 denotes that this suzuki can be equipped to carry up to seven passengers. Fold all the passenger seats down, including the front one, and there's a generous amount of cargo space.  all-new for 2007, this latest xl7 is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous model. If its look seems faintly familiar that's because it's based on the same platform as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent models from gm, though it shares no sheetmetal with them. The xl7 is assembled in canada alongside the equinox and torrent. All-wheel drive is available, improving traction and stability in foul weather and on dirt or gravel roads. The base model now comes only with front-wheel drive and only with seating for five. All-wheel drive 1,600) is optional on the other three models. The premium and luxury are available in both five-passenger and seven-passenger 1,350) configurations, while the top-of-the-line xl7 limited features standard seven-passenger seating.    the base xl7 comes with a five-speed automatic transmission with manumatic manual override. Standard features also include remote keyless entry; power windows, door locks and mirrors; tilt steering wheel; cruise control; trip computer with driver information center; auto on/off headlamps; black roof rails; 16-inch alloy wheels; privacy glass; overhead storage compartment; air conditioning with automatic climate control; and an am/fm/cd stereo system with six speakers.  the xl7 premium adds floor mats and 17-inch alloy wheels. Interior trim is woodgrain or satin-nickel, depending on upholstery color. All three-row, seven-passenger xl7's feature nivomat load-leveling rear suspension, rear cargo under floor storage, and rear air conditioning with separate controls.  the xl7 luxury adds leather seating surfaces, power driver seat, heated front seats, and brushed aluminum-look trim on its bumper valances. For 2008, a sunroof, a six-cd changer, and leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls are standard as well.  the xl7 limited adds fog lamps, rear spoiler, upgraded roof racks with silver-colored rails and cross bars, auto-dimming rearview mirror, 17-inch chrome wheels, pioneer premium am/fm/xm/cd/mp3 audio with seven speakers (including subwoofer), touch-screen navigation, and a remote starter. (xm satellite radio requires a subscription.) a dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones may be substituted for the sunroof and navigation at no cost. A new rear-vision camera 649) is also available, and exclusive to the limited.  the only other factory option is pearl white paint 200), which is available on all models, even the base.  safety features that come standard on all xl7 models include driver and passenger front airbags, side-curtain airbags for all rows of passengers, anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (esp) with traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. walkaroundif there's one design element on the 2008 suzuki xl7 that's going to cause controversy it has to be the large triangular front turn signals that are integrated into the headlights to match the style of the suzuki badge. The edges of the turn signals wrap along the top of the pronounced front fender flare while the top side marks the edge of the hood, which covers the full width of the body ahead of the windshield.  although the xl7 has the same wheelbase as the chevrolet equinox and pontiac torrent its overall length is nearly nine inches greater. Some of this increase in length is in the front, giving the vehicle an unusually long hood line.  the rear three-quarter view of the xl7 is the most awkward angle. It has a heavy d-pillar that slopes down from the roof line, leaving a relatively small third-row side window. The one-piece rear tailgate has an exceptionally curved window that tends to accentuate the bulk of the vehicle.  the front bumper is cleverly built in to the front valence with the center portion painted black to make it appear smaller. The rear bumper is also painted black, but it appears hefty.  the xl7 is built on a platform known as theta that was designed for use as an suv and is sold only in north america. All the vehicles are made in canada at a factory that is jointly owned by suzuki and general motors. interiorsince a sport utility is supposed to provide utility, it's good to find suzuki put plenty of thought into making the xl7 as versatile as possible while providing an inviting interior, especially in the top trim level.  in five-seat configuration, the xl7 provides a decent amount of interior space in both rows of seats. Indeed suzuki claims the leg room in the second row of seats is the most generous in the segment.  there is plenty of cargo area behind the rear seats of the five-passenger models.  getting in and out of the rear seats is easy, an added benefit to the xl7's long wheelbase. The rear wheel well is located behind the seats, allowing for a wide door opening with no intrusion from the wheelwell.  those who opt for the third row of seats will find there is limited cargo space behind the rear seats when they are in use. However, they split in half and can be folded down to provide a flat surface for cargo carrying.  compared to some third-row seats offered in other midsize suvs, the xl7's are relatively comfortable. There is actually enough depth and leg room that a person nearing six foot can sit back there for more than just a few miles. However, because of the small rear side windows it's fairly claustrophobic sitting in the far rear. As with most suvs, however, the seating is far from being as comfortable as that found in any minivan.  naturally, the center row of seats fold down for cargo carrying. The center stack has a high mounted gearshift lever with window switches mounted alongside. The climate control knobs are well located, as are the radio controls.  a rearview camera is offered on limited models, and it's available with or without navigation. That's because instead of integrating with the navigation screen, the suzuki camera uses new technology to display an image on an otherwise-invisible screen on the left side of the rearview mirror. According to suzuki, this enables drivers to back up while looking where they would naturally look: at the mirror. The thinking is that this makes it easier for the driver to monitor the mirror itself, the view through the front windshield, and the view over his or her shoulder; all of which are more difficult to see while peering down at a display screen in the center stack. When the xl7 is in park or drive, the rearview display disappears, and the rearview mirror looks normal. The mirror display is not nearly as effective as the large dash-mounted displays, however, and we prefer the dash-mounted variety.  the previously optional remote starter is now standard on limited models. In a way that's an oxymoron as the xl7 is not truck based, nor is it based directly on a car platform. Instead its platform is somewhere between a car and truck, an approach that's becoming more popular as interest in crossover suvs grows. Its handling falls somewhere between suv and car, as well.  the xl7 shares its basic design with the chevy equinox and pontiac torrent, and its engine is derived from the 3. 6-liter dual overhead cam v6 that powers the premium equinox sport and torrent gxp. For reasons which are not clear to us, however, suzuki rates its version of this engine at a more modest 252 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque, compared with the 264 horsepower and 250 pound-feet claimed by the two gm divisions. Still, the xl7 engine is considerably stronger than the 3. 4-liter pushrod v6 that's standard in the equinox and torrent, which rates only 185 horsepower and 210 pound-feet.  we found performance in the xl7 to be quite adequate, at least in a straight line. The five-speed auto shifts gears smoothly but the engine is somewhat noisy. The transmission includes a manual shift feature. We found it somewhat disconcerting that the selected gear does not show up on the marking beside the gearshift lever itself. The only readout is located in the center of the instr.

2005 hyundai tucson review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Just a few years ago a small suv was almost an oxymoron, then toyota and honda hit the market with the rav4 and the cr-v, both of which became hits. Ford followed soon after with the escape, which quickly became the top-selling small suv.  now hyundai enters the fray with the very well equipped 2005 tucson, offering a viable alternative to the established models.  as one would expect off a vehicle from hyundai, the tucson is attractively priced with the best warranty in the business. It's no barnstormer as far as performance goes but then neither are most of its competitors.  tucson comes standard with an impressive list of safety features. Electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control are all standard. Add to that six airbags, including side-impact airbags and curtain airbags designed to provide head protection for passengers in both rows. The tucson is the lowest cost vehicle with that level of safety features.  bigger is better? Many might disagree with this statement and the hyundai tucson sets out to prove the point. lineupthe hyundai tucson gl 17,499) is the base model. Standard convenience features include air conditioning and power windows, power door locks and heated power mirrors. Slightly larger tires, upgraded cloth trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded sound system, body cladding and windshield wiper de-frosting are among the enhancements over the gl. Manual transmission is not available. Although the tucson is built on the same platform as the santa fe, its styling is quite different and it is shorter in overall length. In fact, it blends in well with other small suvs with a somewhat familiar look, not that dissimilar from the honda cr-v.  the tucson has clean lines with a relatively big grille up front and headlamps that blend in well with the hood line and edge of the fenders. The front bumper is a large one-piece molding that spans from the lower edge of the hood underneath to form a spoiler. Its side profile is fairly flat as it barely protrudes in front of the grille opening. At the back, the edge of the rear bumper reaches up to the tail lights and sticks out from them by a couple of inches adding protection.  the gls and lx models come with lower body cladding that runs from the front bumpers around the fenders and along the lower edges of the doors to the rear bumpers. Finished in matt black the cladding is not too obtrusive.  even though the tucson is not intended for serious off-roading it does have a relatively short front and rear overhang for improved clearance. This is largely thanks to the wheelbase, which is as long as that on the honda cr-v and ford escape even though those two vehicles are several inches longer overall. The tucson also has a wider track, which helps improve its stability.  the rear tailgate slopes forward, avoiding the van-like vertical look of many suvs. The rear window can be opened separately from the main tailgate although it is not very big, making it ineffective for loading much more than small light stuff.  all models come with 16-inch alloy wheels; the gl has five spokes while the other models get six-spoke wheels. A roof rack and tinted windows are also standard on all models. interiorthere's nothing cheap or spartan about the interior of the tucson although it could not be mistaken for a luxury vehicle. Nonetheless it does have some nice touches such as a low-key silver plastic trim around the center stack and gearshift. The large radio and climate controls are mounted reasonably high up for easy reach, as is the gearshift lever. In addition there are a couple of cupholders in the center console. It's also nice to see a proper parking brake lever in the center instead of a pedal-operated parking brake.  there is a decent amount of rear luggage space that can be hidden out of sight by a solid rear cargo cover/parcel shelf. A washable large rubber mat covers a hidden under-floor storage area and helps protect the flooring, as well as providing a non-slip surface. There are six tie-downs at the side for securing cargo in addition to three grocery bag hooks.  the rear seatback splits 60/40 to fold down with the push of single button for even more space. There are no fewer than three 12-volt power outlets; apart from the usual one at the front there is one in the rear cargo area and one at the back of the center console for use by the rear seat passengers.  thanks to the long wheelbase ingress and egress to the rear seats is good and once inside rear seat passengers will find the head and leg room is reasonable for all but the tallest people. The gls comes with brightly colored cloth seats that some people find too gaudy while others like the pattern as it brightens up the interior. driving impressionwe had the opportunity to drive a couple of variations of the tucson powered by the v6 engine. Just a few years ago such an option was only offered on high-end sports cars.  driving down a smooth, slippery, muddy gravel road would have been a great place to test the electronic stability control system. However, the road featured a high crown for drainage with a big ditch along each side. Much as we would liked to have tried to induce a slide we did not want to risk crashing a test vehicle. On the other hand we drove reasonably briskly and not once did we feel the vehicle begin to slip, so perhaps it was working and the system was so transparent in operation that we did not realize it.  a brief drive along a rocky dirt track showed that the tucson can manage some light off-highway duty. Without low gearing and aggressive off-road tires it was not able to climb a really steep slippery slope. Most of the time the electronically controlled system routes up to 99 percent of the power to the front wheels. Then as road conditions change the system diverts up to 50 percent of the power to the rear wheels. In this way power is routed to the wheels that have the best traction. In really slippery conditions the driver can push a button on the dashboard to lock the driveline in a 50/50 torque split.  we drove all-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive models and in general driving we found the ride and handling to be slightly better in the 4wd versions. This might seem counterintuitive, but it was probably because there is slightly more weight in the back on the 4wd model making the weight balance better. What's more, on wet and slippery roads there was a distinct lack of wheel spin from the front wheels on the vehicles with 4wd. All told, the 4wd option is worthwhile.  the steering felt connected although it was a tad light in feel. Judging from the performance of the v6-powered tucson we expect performance to be anemic especially with an automatic transmission. However, hyundai does not expect this to be a popular model. summaryhyundai has come a long way in terms of quality and reputation in the past few years. What's more it costs hundreds of dollars less than its rivals yet it is loaded with features.  the tucson is not a sporty vehicle, but the v6 engine provides enough power to satisfy most people. Overall, the tucson is the right sort of car for someone looking for a roomy entry-level vehicle that costs less than its rivals, yet includes plenty of state-of-the-art safety features, lots of comfort and convenience feat. 2006 kia rio review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new subcompact sedan and five-door hatch. introductionthe kia rio is all-new for 2006. The rio has been a benchmark for subcompacts the past few years. Its redesign is all the more momentous as the new rio models join a wave of exciting new subcompacts that are hitting the streets.  that wave includes the new toyota yaris, nissan versa, and honda fit, along with all-new versions of the chevrolet aveo and hyundai accent. These subcompacts are smaller than compact cars, such as the toyota corolla and honda civic, but the newest subcompacts excel at space utilization and some are offering premium features.  indeed, subcompacts have never been better and the new kia rio sedan and rio5 hatchback are perfect examples. In addition to being inexpensive, they are stylish little cars with spacious interiors. They deliver sprightly performance, great fuel economy and agile handling. Kia has substantially improved the quality of its cars with the newest models, according to j. Power and associates latest initial quality (iqs) numbers. It's a sophisticated modern engine, complete with dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing. Safety features that come on all models include front seatbelt pre-tensioners along with six airbags: dual frontal, front seat side-impact and full-coverage side-impact curtain.  the rio sedan is available as a base model or in lx trim. The rio5 five-door hatchback is available exclusively in sx trim.  the base rio sedan 10,570) comes strictly with a manual transmission, wind-up windows, manual door locks. There's no radio or air conditioning, no power steering. The sx hatchback has the same major features as the lx sedan but with some sporty additions that include a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, metal grain trim, metal pedals, rear roof-mounted spoiler and lower profile tires on 15-inch alloy wheels. Factory installed options are the same as for the lx sedan. walkaroundthere is nothing wimpy about either of the kia rio models. In terms of styling, they're a far cry from the old rio models.  the sedan has a solid looking front end with a strong nose and big headlights that give it a purposeful appearance. The crease along the side of the car below the big windows ends up wrapping around the trunk, giving the sedan more the look of a european sports sedan than that of a korean econobox.  all models come with hefty body-color side moldings that do not detract too badly as they align nicely with the wrap around edges of the front and rear bumpers. The fender flares actually look a shade too big on the base and lx models, which have skinnier tires. The fender flares fill out much better on the rio5 sx with its lower-profile tires and 15-inch wheels.  the rio5 looks taller than the sedan but it is actually the same overall height. It's a couple of inches shorter in height than the chevrolet aveo and scion xa, its closest rivals. The rear of the rio5 is distinctive with backup lights that wrap around the taillights and almost look like part of the body. The c-pillar curves down to the taillights and the tailgate has full width gals making the back more attractive than on many hatchbacks. interiorthe interior of the 2007 kia rio represents a big improvement over the old rio. The radio is well positioned in the center stack with large buttons and knobs for changing stations or volume. Three big knobs for the climate control are mounted on a bulge in the center that brings them closer to the driver's hands.  the seats are on the soft side and don't offer the lateral support we'd expect on a sports sedan. The rear seatback folds down in a 60/40 split for added versatility in all but the base model. According to kia, the total interior volume of the rio is greater than that of the honda civic and toyota corolla even though they are officially in the next size up segment. In practical terms, they are all pretty close. The rio5 has a cargo carrying a capacity of almost 50 cubic feet with the seats folded down which is substantially more than in other hatchbacks of this size.  minor touches such as the metal pedals, leather wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob on the rio5 sx will appeal to sporty drivers. Most drivers will probably not consciously notice these things but they will certainly help instill a better feeling about the car for them. driving impressionafter driving three varieties of the kia rio on highways and freeways around seattle, we came away impressed with the new models.  we spent time in an lx automatic and a rio5 sx manual. We enjoyed shifting the manual as it definitely makes for a more sporty experience. However, the lx with the automatic transmission was no slouch. Cars in this class traditionally suffer a big performance and fuel economy hit with an automatic, but the new rio confirms that modern transmissions have largely addressed these deficiencies.  kia claims it is making its cars more sporty and athletic than the hyundai accent, the rio's sibling. The rio is far from being a sporty car, but the sx handled nimbly without too much body lean or sloppy handling. The lx with its skinner 14-inch tires was not quite as secure, although most drivers would not complain.  the power steering, which stiffens up as the engine speed increases, felt taught with just the right amount of feel dialed in. We found the rio5 sx the most enjoyable with its hatchback versatility and sporty/luxury touches. The rio comes with a comprehensive set of passive safety features. Even the base model includes six airbags. It also includes a generous five-year/60,000 mile warranty coupled with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  newcartestdrive.
